Need a reminder why Instagram is so important to your business?
In 2017 it’s expected that 70% of brands will be on Instagram. The engagement is 10 times higher than on Facebook, 54 times higher than Pinterest and a huge 84 times higher than Twitter.
As wedding professionals, we all know we need to be on top of social media but sometimes the weight of expectation can get the better of us. It seems like everyone else is better at it than you; collaborating with bigger people, checking into cooler locations, attending more exclusive events and Instagramming cooler coffee art (let's be real - this is the thing we all get most jealous about!).
To help you slug your way around Instagram, and still leave enough time to do what you do best, I’ve put together a quick top 5 tips for Instagram success.
1. Have a brand identity and use it to your advantage!
You agonised over your business name and mocked up hundred of different typography, colour palette and logo options for weeks until you decided on what it would be…so make the most of it! All these things make up your brand identity and make the foundation of what you’re known for. So think what you want to come to mind when your customers think about you - and make your feed tell that story.
Decide what you want your social media to say about you and what you want the public and industry folk to think about you and make sure your channels say that. Sound difficult? It’s easier than you think. Let’s start off with subtle branding of images.
2. Make a movie out of it
Videos are quickly becoming the hottest thing on Instagram, reaching far more users. They can increase customers understanding of your product or service and give them an extremely valuable insight into your brand identity.
The good news is you don’t have to produce an Oscar-worthy piece of material. Just keep it short and sweet, between 30-50 seconds is ideal.
3. Post the right things at the right time
Posting too much can flood your followers feeds and actually mean you lose followers. But not posting enough means your followers could forget about you when it comes to when they need to make their purchasing decisions. The key is to be relevant and consistent. There’s no hard and fast rule to this, so just try to put yourself in the shoes of your followers and think before you post - is this relevant? Does this add any value to their life? Do they really need to see this?
With the new Instagram algorithm, it’s more important than ever to be active on Instagram. You can do this by answering questions, asking questions, commenting, liking and sharing! It can be as simple as telling someone you love their new range, or letting a former customer know that her new hairstyle looks great! Being social means supporting others as much as they support - something that will pay dividends into the future, as who know what it could lead to!
Hashtags help Instagram users discover content and accounts to follow. The right hashtag, or combination of hashtags, will expose your brand to large and targeted audiences. By making yourself more discoverable on Instagram, you have a better chance of attracting new followers, getting more likes, and increasing engagement. Posts with at least one hashtag gain over 12% more engagement, it’s a quick win to boost the engagement of your post!
However it’s really easy to make a hash out of it (pun intended). If you’ve ever read a post that was 90% hashtags or full of ones that come across a bit desperate, you’ll know how annoying it is and understand that it can do more harm than good for your business. Make sure your hashtags are relevant to what’s in the image and don’t overdo it!
